Landlords check the places normal cleaning skips: inside the oven, fridge and cabinets, baseboards, window tracks, bathroom grout and wall scuffs. Clean those, empty the unit completely and photograph every room before you hand back the keys.

Protect yourself

  • Compare against your move-in inspection sheet; normal wear and tear is different from damage.
  • Take dated photos or a video of each room after the clean.
  • Give the landlord your forwarding address or delivery instructions in writing. In Iowa that address is what starts the return clock. In Nebraska, if you leave no address, the landlord mails to your last-known address.
  • Know the deadline. Nebraska: the landlord must deliver or mail the balance, if any, and a written itemization within 14 days after the tenancy ends (Neb. Rev. Stat. § 76-1416). A separate tenant demand is not what starts those 14 days. Iowa, including Council Bluffs and Carter Lake: 30 days from the date the tenancy ends and the landlord receives your mailing address or delivery instructions (Iowa Code § 562A.12).
