Carter Lake is the only Iowa city west of the Missouri River. A March 1877 flood cut off a bend and left the oxbow; Nebraska v. Iowa, decided in 1892, kept the land in Iowa. The town separated from Council Bluffs in 1930. It is about two square miles, wrapped by Omaha on the west, north, and east, with the river on the south. The 2020 census counted 3791 residents. Abbott Drive is the arterial that carries Eppley Airfield traffic. Downtown Omaha is usually about ten minutes away. City hall at 950 East Locust, a 2008 building, also holds the police department and the post office. Levi Carter Park, about 520 acres on the Omaha side, wraps the north and west shores. Decks and walkouts along the lake are the patio add-on, $25, when you want that surface included. Entry floors pick up sand after a walk around the oxbow. Say if the door you actually use faces the water. There is no Iowa upcharge on the starting prices.
